SPO ATELIER LIMITED

Six services, one balanced system

Integrated systems design from first sketch to fifth year

SPO ATELIER LIMITED works across the whole technical layer of a building or venue. The six services below can be commissioned individually or as a single engagement, and each is delivered by the same practice from the studio at 80 Winterbourne Road in Chichester. Together they cover the full arc of a project: deciding what should exist, building the surfaces people touch, planning the experiences visitors meet, installing the physical hardware, connecting everything across a network, and keeping the whole assembly in balance for years afterward.

SVC-01

Systems Design Consultancy

Every good build starts with a clear map of what the technology is for. Our consultancy service surveys the space, interviews the people who will operate it, and models the signal, power and control paths before a single item is ordered. We produce equipment schedules, schematics, room data sheets and a written control philosophy that describes how each subsystem should behave, including what happens when something fails. The brief is priced transparently so that a client can decide what to phase and what to defer.

Because we are engineers rather than resellers, our recommendations are driven by fitness for purpose. We will happily specify equipment we do not supply ourselves if it is the right choice for the venue, and we document the reasoning so that decisions survive staff changes. The consultancy output is designed to be tendered, so contractors can quote against a definite scope rather than a loose aspiration. Clients often begin here and then continue into the build tiers once the design has settled.

SVC-02

Control Console Engineering

The control console is the single point where a complex system becomes something a person can actually run. We design each console as both furniture and instrumentation, starting from the operator posture, the sight lines in the room and the frequency of every command. Physical controls are reserved for functions that must work instantly and without thought, while everything configurable lives in a clean software interface. The fascia is machined and finished in our workshop, then wired and labelled so that maintenance is straightforward years later.

Behind the panel we write the logic layer, map every input and output, and build in safe states so that a power interruption or a lost network link degrades gracefully rather than catastrophically. Each console is bench-tested under realistic load with the actual media and devices it will drive. We deliver a full wiring schedule, a control logic document and a training session, so the venue understands not only which button does what but why the system was arranged this way.

SVC-03

Interactive Installation Planning

Interactive work succeeds or fails in the planning, long before fabrication. We study visitor flow, dwell time, sight lines and the physical durability of every element a member of the public might touch. Sensor technologies are chosen against the real conditions of the space: ambient light, footfall, acoustics and the patience of a family on a busy weekend. Each exhibit is planned with its own reset condition and a clear failure mode that keeps the room coherent even when one piece is offline.

We also plan the invisible choreography between exhibits, so that media, lighting and sound do not fight each other across a shared floor. Accessibility is treated as a design input rather than an afterthought, covering reach ranges, contrast and alternative interaction methods. The output of this service is a planning pack that a fabricator, an electrician and a media producer can all work from without contradicting one another, plus a commissioning script for the day the installation first runs in public.

SVC-04

Hardware Integration and Fitout

Integration is where the drawings become racks, screens, sensors, motors and cable. We supply and install the physical equipment layer, coordinating with main contractors, electricians and joiners so that our work lands cleanly inside everyone else schedule. Our teams follow a strict cable discipline with clear labelling, service loops and separation between power and signal, because an orderly rack is a rack that can be repaired at speed. Everything is mounted to withstand the public, not just the showroom.

Commissioning is carried out against the original specification, test by test, with results recorded. We run each subsystem on its own and then as part of the whole, checking that a failure in one area cannot cascade into another. As-built drawings, asset registers and warranty information are handed over in a single package. The fitout service can be combined with console engineering from the same practice, which means fewer interfaces to manage and one clear point of responsibility when the room is finally switched on.

SVC-05

Networked Audiovisual Systems

Audio, video and control now travel as data, and that data has to be engineered rather than assumed. We design converged networks with defined quality of service, virtual segmentation and redundant paths, so that a control command is never trapped behind a video stream. Switches, endpoints and monitoring tools are configured and documented, and the topology is explained in plain language that a venue technician can follow. Wherever possible we build on standards rather than proprietary silos, which keeps future expansion affordable.

Our networked audiovisual service includes assessment of existing infrastructure, because a great deal of value can often be recovered before new cabling is pulled. We test throughput, latency and recovery behaviour under load, then produce a monitoring plan that flags a degrading link before it becomes a visible fault. The result is a media layer that behaves like a utility: quiet, predictable and diagnosable from a distance, whether the venue is a single room or a campus of interconnected spaces.

SVC-06

Maintenance and Support Contracts

A system proves itself in its fifth year, not on handover day. Our support contracts provide scheduled inspection, firmware and software upkeep, spares holding and remote diagnostics, with a defined response time for faults that affect the public. We keep a living record of every installation so that a callout begins with knowledge rather than guesswork. Reports are written so that both a technical team and a finance team can understand what was found and what it cost to keep the room running.

Contracts are shaped to the venue: heavy public sites may need monthly visits, while a studio might prefer an annual service with remote support in between. We also offer operator refresher training, because a system is only as capable as the people running it. When a fault does occur, the first priority is always to restore the space, and the second is to explain clearly what happened and what has been changed to reduce the chance of a repeat. That honest loop is what keeps a build in equilibrium.

The engagement process

Ready to bring a studio, venue or public space into balance? SPO ATELIER LIMITED is accepting a limited number of new integration engagements this season. Write to studio@spoatelier.lol or use the contact page to request the engagement brief and arrange a survey from the Winterbourne Road studio.
